VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Vancouver Public Library Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Ben Hyman as the new Chief Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of Vancouver Public Library (VPL). With an extensive background in library leadership, Hyman brings a dynamic vision to one of the city's most cherished public institutions. Hyman will start with VPL on July 2nd.

Ben Hyman comes to VPL with over 20 years' experience advancing public interest initiatives across British Columbia’s library, education, technology, and not-for-profit sectors. He is currently serving as Executive Director at Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL), where he has led both recovery and strategic renewal initiatives. Under his leadership, the organization has achieved significant milestones, and VIRL is well-positioned for continued success on behalf of the communities it serves.

Hyman is recognized for his collaborative approach, strategic foresight, and enduring advocacy for public services that strengthen communities. “I’m honored to join Vancouver Public Library and to build on its remarkable legacy,” said Hyman. “VPL is a thriving urban library, and I look forward to working with VPL’s talented staff and diverse community partners to ensure the library continues to thrive for generations to come.”

Board Chair Karen Spears added, “We are excited to welcome Ben Hyman as our new Chief Librarian & CEO. His leadership will help guide us into the future, ensuring the library remains a vital resource for Vancouver residents.”

Hyman succeeds Christina de Castell, who departed VPL earlier this year after seven years as the Library’s CEO.
