Self-published Vancouver authors: VPL wants your books

Submissions now being accepted for new Vancouver Indie Authors collection

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Calling all Vancouver self-published authors: the library wants your books.

Vancouver Public Library is launching a new Vancouver Indie Authors collection to support and showcase the city’s self-publishing scene, and is now accepting submissions of self-published books and ebooks.

“Self-publishing has really taken off in the last several years – and we know that Vancouver has a talented and active community of authors publishing their own works,” says Christina de Castell, VPL’s director of collections and technology.

“Libraries have always supported writers and publishers, and we’ve always been places to discover new books and new authors – now we’re extending that to promoting self-published Vancouver books.

“We want to showcase these titles and help bring them to a wider audience,” says de Castell, citing the popularity of self-publishing: research shows that nearly half of all adult fiction titles sold are self-published.

Titles submitted for the new collection must meet a handful of requirements, including being properly formatted; books must be about Vancouver or the author must live in the city or be a member of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) or səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

VPL will pay authors the listed retail price for any book it includes in the collection, which will be fully searchable for borrowers – making it a great way for Vancouver readers to experience this type of publishing.

Books can be in any of the 17 languages of the library’s collection, including English, French, Chinese, Punjabi, Tagalog and Vietnamese.

VPL plans to officially launch the Vancouver Indie Authors collection on May 13 at a day-long festival celebrating writing and publishing.
