Finding Newspaper Articles in the Vancouver Sun and Province

Introduction

Online Information & News  on Level 5 of the Central Library carries Vancouver’s major newspapers from their very inception;

Vancouver Sun: February 12, 1912 (first published) to present.

Province: March 3, 1894 (first published) to present.

Current issues (approximately the past two months) are in the Newspaper Reading Gallery. Previous issues are kept on microfilm.

Previous issues are available on microfilm. Both newspapers were replaced by the Vancouver Express during two strikes: Feb. - May 1970 and Nov. 1978 - June 1979. This paper is interfiled with the Vancouver Sun.

  • B.C. Legislative Library Index: microfilm on Level 5 and in Special Collections from 1900-1910, 1916-1990, and online at www.webpac.leg.bc.ca covering 1991 to present (about 3 months back).

    This is a selective index, with a focus on governmental affairs. There is a subject guide in the Special Collections.

  • BCARS (British Columbia Archives and Records Service) Newspaper Index: microfiche available on Level 5 and in Special Collections on Level 7. Covers B.C. newspapers over a broad time period (1850-1984), but is most comprehensive for the Vancouver Sun and the Province from 1940-1984.

  • Canadian Newspaper Index 070X C212 and Canadian News Index 070X C212. Print indexes which include the Vancouver Sun 1977-1992. Housed on Level 5.

  • Canadian Business and Current Affairs (CBCA): online index which includes selected Vancouver Sun articles, 1982 - 2001. Ask the staff how to access this database.

  • Newspaper Clipping Files: a collection of newspaper articles from about 1950 to June 2002 with a focus on local topics. Ask the staff how to access the index to the subject headings. The files are located on Level 5 and in Special Collections, Level 7.

  • Northwest History Index: selective indexing of local history topics from a wide range of sources up to August 1998. In card format in the Special Collections.

  • Pacific Press Clippings File (on microfiche): Vancouver-related stories arranged in subject order from the Vancouver Sun and the Province, 1920-1983. The subject headings used are indexed on the Newspaper Clippings Collection Index. Ask the staff how to access these resources.

  • VPL Province Index 070.1X P96 A print index which covers business-related stories in the Province 1960-1979. Housed on Level 5.
