Public Library AskAway Virtual Reference Service to Close June 30

- Vancouver Public Library To Continue Telephone & Email Service -

For Immediate Release, June 15, 2010

(Vancouver, British Columbia) - AskAway, the province-wide virtual reference service, will no longer be available to public library users after June 30. Vancouver Public Library, however, will continue to offer telephone and email reference service.

AskAway for public libraries was funded by the B.C. Ministry of Education until March 31. Public libraries have continued the service with staffing adjustments and by reducing service hours, said Shelagh Flaherty, Director of VPL’s Central Library. Vancouver Public Library administered the program.

Launched in 2006, AskAway provided real-time reference service to British Columbians. Vancouver Public Library users can call 604-331-3603 or complete the online email form on the Library website to have their questions answered.

AskAway is a collaboration between public and post-secondary libraries in British Columbia and will continue for post-secondary students. That service is funded by post-secondary libraries in partnership with BCcampus, a collaborative online learning agency that supports BC’s public post-secondary institutions.
