One Book, One Vancouver Heads Skyward: Spider Robinson Announces Sci Fi Classic

For Immediate Release, September 26, 2010

(Vancouver, BC) – For those who haven’t read the sci fi classic The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy for some years and to introduce the intelligent satire, hilarious dialogue and thought-provoking situations to those yet to read it, Vancouver Public Library users have chosen the 1979 novel as this year’s One Book, One Vancouver title.

In June, Vancouver residents voted for three novels as the book they think all Vancouverites should read this fall. The choices were: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, The Absolutely True Dairies of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexis and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

The winning selection was announced Sunday by the Library’s 2010 Writer in Residence Spider Robinson at the annual Word on the Street literary festival at Library Square.

“It was completely random that Vancouver residents chose this science fiction classic as this year’s One Book, One Vancouver book and that our 2010 Writer in Residence happens to be one of the most-acclaimed science fiction writers,” said City Librarian Paul Whitney.

“It’s a great synchronicity,” he added.

From now until the end of November, the Library will bring the book alive for audiences around the city with an array of programs, events and contests including writing workshops, a film screening, a high-tech Innovation Expo and a Vogon Poetry Slam Off! Users of each of the Library’s 20 branches and the Central Library will also be asked to suggest items for a Vision 2040 Time Capsule that will be locked in the Central Library and opened in 2040.

Information for all of this year’s One Book, One Vancouver activities can be found at vpl.ca/obov and there are program guides available at all Library branches. The Library has purchased hundreds of copies of the book in print, audio and E formats and they can be reserved by visiting any Library branch or at www.vpl.ca.

Now in its ninth year, One Book, One Vancouver promotes reading and encourages discussion by bringing people together around a great book. One Book, One Vancouver is presented by Vancouver Public Library in partnership with: H.B. Fenn & Company Ltd., White Dwarf Books, the Friends of the Vancouver Public Library, H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, the Word on the Street Festival and media partner The Vancouver Sun.
