Minor Damage Sustained at Central Library After Stanley Cup Final

For Immediate Release, June 16, 2011

(Vancouver, British Columbia) – Vancouver’s Central Library sustained minor damage in the events following Wednesday’s final game of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The Central Library, located on a city block ringed by Hamilton, Robson and Homer streets, was within the live site outdoor area where fans gathered to watch the games between the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins on several giant screens and on the CBC plaza on Hamilton Street.

Two windows, one on the south plaza above the Children’s Library and one on the Homer Street side between Levels 2 and 3, were broken and have been boarded up. Replacement windows will be installed as soon as possible. A small area in the Children’s Library will be closed Thursday morning as staff thoroughly clean to remove all glass fragments. Two garbage containers near the Central Library were set on fire on Wednesday evening, however, there was no damage to the building. On June 8, one of the porthole-like windows on the Hamilton Street side of the building was damaged.

As in other areas of downtown Vancouver on Thursday morning, volunteers assisted City of Vancouver staff in sweeping up glass and debris.
