Library's New Storytime Kits a Treasure of Songs,
Stories and Rhymes
For immediate release – February 1, 2010
(Vancouver, British Columbia) – Young children learn best when they also have fun and the Library’s new Storytime Kits will ensure that children attending daycares, Family Places, community centre programs and preschools do both.
The kits, a first for Vancouver Public Library, include ten colourful picture books, a felt story to share, puppets, a CD, toys and lists of related rhymes, songs and lively activities to use during circle time or storytime. They can be borrowed by anyone with a valid VPL Institutional Library Card and are an especially useful tool for childcare providers and early childhood educators.
“Studies show that children who are exposed to nursery rhymes and songs at an early age improve their speech and language skills earlier than children not exposed to songs, stories and rhymes,” said Annette DeFaveri, Manager, Children’s & Youth Services. “Hands-on learning is one of the most effective ways for children to pick up essential skills.”
Storytime Kits create fun, language learning experiences for young children that help to develop early literacy skills while providing an array of engaging, enjoyable activities for youngsters and caregivers alike. The new Storytime Kits feature over 10 fun themes like the alphabet, farm animals, feelings, music and dance, food and transportation.
“Storytime Kits are specifically designed to make learning fun and easy for children and their caregivers,” said DeFaveri. “They are also an economical way for early childhood educators to access a wider assortment of learning tools and activities that will keep youngsters engaged and learning throughout the year.”
A full list of Storytime Kits themes is available on the Library’s online catalogue at www.vpl.ca where you will also find a list of box contents for each theme.
Institutional Library Cardholders may borrow one Storytime Kits for up to four weeks. Storytime Kits can be reserved, picked up and returned to any VPL Library Branch. To be eligible for a VPL Institutional Library Card, childcare centres, preschools and family childcare homes must hold a valid CCFL license in Vancouver or be registered as a license-not-required care provider with Westcoast Child Care Resource Centre (www.wstcoast.org) and be listed with Westcoast Family Information and Referral.
