Vancouver Public Library Welcomes 2009 Board of Trustees

(Vancouver, British Columbia) – Vancouver Public Library is very pleased to welcome five new trustees and welcome back eight trustees to the Vancouver Public Library Board.
 
Heather Harrison, School Board Trustee Mike Lombardi, Park Board Trustee Stuart Mackinnon, City Councillor Tim Stephenson and Tommy Tao are the Board’s new members.

Ms. Harrison teaches philosophy at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and is a strong sustainability and social justice advocate. Mr. Lombardi is a retired school teacher and has been a Director of the BC Federation of Teachers. Mr. Mackinnon is a Special Education teacher and is active in parks and green space issues. Mr. Stephenson was elected to Vancouver City Council in 2002, was a provincial Cabinet Minister and a United Church minister. He was the first openly gay person ordained in a mainstream Christian denomination in Canada. Mr. Tao is a lawyer, writer and active community volunteer with over 20 years voluntary service both within and beyond the local Chinese community. He previously served on the Library Board in 2006-2007.

At the Board’s inaugural 2009 meeting, Joan Andersen was re-elected Chair and Loring Bohach and Erfan Kazemi were re-elected Vice Chairs.

This is Ms. Andersen’s fourth term as Chair. She is the Program Director of CBC British Columbia and is a member of Literacy BC’s Board of Directors.

“We achieved a great deal in the past 12 months and are looking forward to another exciting and challenging year at Vancouver Public Library,” said Ms. Andersen. “On behalf of the VPL Board and staff, I would like to thank outgoing Board members Elizabeth Ball, Ann Cowan, Clarence Hansen, Heather Holden and Edward Soorany for their leadership and commitment to improving library services for the citizens of Vancouver and welcome our newest Board members.“

Other returning Board members are: Shannon Daub, Cindy Grauer, Larry Kuehn, Lori Mathison and Debbie Millward.

Founded in 1869, the Vancouver Public Library is one of Canada's largest library systems, dedicated to meeting the lifelong learning, reading, recreation and information needs of the people of Vancouver. Each year, the Library’s 22 branches serve over 370,000 visitors and offer over 2.5 million items, including books, CDs, DVDs and magazines, and countless online resources.
