Library 2010 Budget

For immediate release – November 13, 2009

LIBRARY BOARD TO DETERMINE 2010 BUDGET PRIORITIES

Note: the Library Board meeting has been rescheduled to Wednesday, November 25th.

(Vancouver, British Columbia) – Vancouver Public Library Board Trustees will consider Management recommendations on November 25 to address the impact of City-wide budgetary pressures resulting in a funding gap to the Library of $1.354 million as well as a $220,000 reduction in provincial grants.

In 2010, the planned Library budget allocation from the City will increase by $800,000, however, this increase will not address all anticipated cost pressures.

The Library’s proposed 2010 operating budget will then be submitted to City Council.

The recommendations to meet the 2010 budget allocation are:

  • Reduce operating hours and related staffing budgets at up to 13 neighbourhood branches and close the Riley Park Branch: $515,000
  • Reduce the public service staffing budget while maintaining current hours at the Central Library: $419,000
    OR
Reduce operating hours by three hours per week and the related staffing budget at the Central Library: $419,000
  • Reduce the Technical Services budget by $360,000
  • Reduce the Collections budget by $180,000
  • Reduce the Administrative budget by $100,000

“These service reductions designed by Management are intended to minimize the overall impact on Library users.” said City Librarian Paul Whitney. “However, the services we provide to the public will be affected.”

City Council will determine the 2010 budget on December 15 and there may be changes made at that time to the proposed Departmental and Board allocations. In addition to the Library Board, the Parks and Police Boards will also submit their 2010 budgets.

The Library’s Operating Budget Report can be found here.
