Award-Winning Author 4th Writer-in-Residence

For Immediate Release August 13, 2008

(Vancouver, British Columbia) - Acclaimed award-winning author Caroline Adderson is Vancouver Public Library’s 2008 Writer-in-Residence.

Ms. Adderson is the author of two internationally published prize-winning novels, A History of Forgetting and Sitting Practice, as well as short story collections and books for young readers. Her work has been nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award and the Giller Prize and she is a two-time Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize and three-time CBC Literary Award winner.

Ms. Adderson began her tenure this week at the Canadian Book Camp leading a workshop for teen writers and her residency continues until December 2008. She will divide her time between her own writing projects and sharing her experience with the community through a variety of activities including readings, workshops and mentoring emerging writers.

Now in its fourth year, VPL’s Writer-in-Residence Program promotes writing and reaches out to communities not typically exposed to Canadian literature. In addition to writing, Ms. Adderson has taught English as a Second Language for many years and will work with writers whose first language is not English during her residency. She will also work with children and their caregivers to create their own book and work on her newest adult novel, tentatively titled The Sky is Falling.

"We are thrilled to have Caroline Adderson as our 2008 Writer-in-Residence," said Corinne Durston, Director of Youth Services & Community Relations. "The combination of Caroline’s writing skill and experience as an ESL instructor will greatly benefit developing writers."

Ms. Adderson will also be available to mentor developing writers who must apply to be considered. Information is available at 604-331-4041 or programs@vpl.ca.

The inaugural reading of the 2008 Writer-in-Residence takes place on Thursday, September 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Alice MacKay Room, Lower Level, Central Library (350 W. Georgia Street). Admission is free.

The 2008 VPL Writer-in-Residence Program is made possible by financial support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Friends of the Vancouver Public Library. For more information about the program, please contact your local library or visit www.vpl.ca.
