2009 Express Yourself Bookmark Contest for Teens
For Immediate Release September 15, 2009
(Vancouver, British Columbia) – Using their artistic talents and creative flair, Vancouver teens are invited to design a bookmark celebrating winter reading in Vancouver Public Library's ExpressYourself Bookmark Contest.
In celebration of Vancouver hosting the 2010 Winter Games, this year contest organizers have teamed up with the Library’s One Book, One Vancouver: The Host City Reads program. Winners in two categories – Best Hand-Drawn Bookmark and Best-Computer Generated Bookmark – will be selected by VPL's Teen Advisory Group and Young Adult Services Committee based on creativity and artistic merit expressing the contest theme of winter reading.
Winners will receive cash prizes of $250 and have their bookmark printed and distributed to all 22 VPL locations across the city. Prizes from Westbeach snowboarding apparel are also being awarded for participation. Vancouver teens 13 to 18 years old have until October 16 to submit their entries and the winners will be announced in November.
Last year’s contest was extremely successful, attracting a record-breaking 547 entries. Library staff are anticipating another great response and are looking forward to seeing how Vancouver teens interpret this year’s theme.
“We were thrilled with last year’s participation,” said Teen Librarian Pippa Rogers. “We received hundreds of wonderful and creative entries from talented teens across the city. We can’t wait to see how imaginative and inspiring this year’s entries will be.”
Young artists of all levels are invited to participate. To enter, teens can pick up an entry form at any VPL library branch or at www.vpl.ca/events/details/express_yourself_teen_bookmark_contest and create their own original artwork in the space provided. The completed form and finished design can be submitted at any VPL branch by October 16.
Entry forms and full contest rules are available at all VPL branches and online at www.vpl.ca. The Library’s Teen Librarians can answer questions at 604-331-3690.
Now in its eighth year, One Book, One Vancouver is Vancouver’s city-wide book club, promoting reading and encouraging discussion. To celebrate Vancouver hosting the 2010 Winter Games, Vancouver Public Library has expanded one of our most popular programs and titled it The Host City Reads. For the first time, the program is featuring a children’s book as well as a title for teens and adults: Linda Bailey’s The Farm Team for children and families and Janet Love Morrison’s The Crazy Canucks: Canada’s Legendary Ski Team for teens and adults.
One Book, One Vancouver is presented by Vancouver Public Library in partnership with: the City of Vancouver Host a City Happening Program, the Friends of the Vancouver Public Library, Harbour Publishing, Kids Can Press, Canada Council for the Arts, Westbeach, the Word on the Street Festival and media partners The Vancouver Sun and CTV.
