2008 Express Yourself Teen Bookmark Contest Winners Announced

For Immediate Release – November 20, 2008

(Vancouver, B.C.– Vancouver Public Library is pleased to announce the winners of its third annual Express Yourself Teen Bookmark Contest.

Between September 15 to October 24, the Library invited young artists aged 13 to 18 years old to show off their imagination and creative flair by designing a bookmark celebrating teens and libraries. The winners of the 2008 Express Yourself Bookmark Contest are:

  • Susy Hsi of Vancouver (age 16) – Best Hand-Drawn Bookmark
  • Alisa Brandt of Vancouver (age 13) – Best Computer-Generated Bookmark

The contest is a big hit with teens with entries for this year’s contest doubling to 547 from 220 in 2007.

“We couldn’t be happier with the incredible quality and quantity of this year’s entries,” said Teen Librarian Kim McDonald. “It is amazing to see so many talented young artists participate in the contest.”

The bookmark contest was created as a fun and creative way for teens to connect with their library. The winners in two categories – Best Hand-Drawn Bookmark and Best Computer-Generated Bookmark – were selected by the Library’s Teen Advisory Group. Selections were based on creativity and artistic merit as well as how their design reflected the contest’s theme of teens and libraries.

Susy and Alisa will receive cash prizes of $250 and their bookmarks will be printed and distributed at all 22 Vancouver Public Library locations across the city.

The Library would like to thank the Friends of the Vancouver Public Library for providing funding for this exciting project.

Founded in 1869, the Vancouver Public Library is one of Canada's largest library systems and is dedicated to meeting the lifelong learning, reading, recreation and information needs of the people of Vancouver. Each year, the Library’s 22 branches serve over 370,000 patrons, offer over 2.5 million items and countless online resources to the public and answer more than one million reference questions. In 2006, a record 10 million items were borrowed!
