Newest Library Branch Serves Diverse Community

January 10, 2009 - 11:00 AM - Kensington Branch

Mayor Robertson Opens Kensington Library Branch

Mayor Gregor Robertson today officially opened Vancouver Public Library’s newest neighbourhood branch located in the fast-growing Kensington-Cedar Cottage community. Mayor Robertson was joined by City Councillors, Library Board Chair Joan Andersen and Board Trustees, City Librarian Paul Whitney and community members.

“Libraries are one of the cornerstones and most-important public spaces in our city because all are welcome at the Central Library and 21 neighbourhood branches,” Mayor Robertson said.

“Like residents here today, I am very proud of the Library’s newest neighbourhood branch in this culturally diverse community,” he added. “The Library works to meet the needs of families and their children, new Canadians and seniors. From helping people with job searches to children’s storytimes and computer instruction, library staff are here to assist residents.”

The state-of-the-art 7,500 square-foot library located in the new King Edward Village replaces a 28-year-old 1,500-square-foot storefront branch that was located across the street on Knight St.

“The improvements for the community in the new Kensington Branch are immense,” said Andersen. “There are many times more the amount of space, materials and staff, including a full-time Children’s Librarian, than in the storefront. Forty-three thousand new items – books, CDs and DVDs – were purchased for the branch and there are 12 Internet stations, wirelessInternet access and underground parking.”

Especially in difficult economic times, libraries are an important community resource.

“Libraries are sometimes called the people’s university and whether you attend for pleasure or self-improvement, Vancouver Public Library is for all residents,” said Whitney. “We provide opportunities for entertainment, enjoyment, learning and inspiration to people of all ages, from babies to seniors.”

The Kensington Branch is open Tuesday to Saturday and includes a meeting room that is available to the community after hours. Full Branch information is available here.

Boxing @ Library Square

June 19, 2008 - 12:00 PM - Central Library

Authors have read, musicians played and singers sung and on June 19th, in a first for a Canadian Library, boxers boxed in the Central Library Promenade!

Boxing took centre stage at VPL to illustrate one of the central themes in the book chosen for the entire city to read. Boxing figures prominently in this year's knock-out One Book, One Vancouver selection, The Five Books of Moses Lapinsky by Karen X. Tulchinsky.

Two Canadian Olympic boxers were joined in a regulation-size ring by the current Canadian and BC Junior champions, where they demonstrated the skill and finesse involved in this much-loved sport and explored with Tulchinsky how boxing came to feature so prominently in her novel.
