Free-For-All: Reimagining Your Library!

When you think library, do you envision a quiet space with books and people speaking in hushed voices? Or do you see groups of people engaged in discussion, rows of computers with people scanning the screen, watching videos and listening to music, people tucked into comfy chairs with their laptops and children dancing at a puppet show?
Vancouver Public Library endeavours to provide spaces to meet the multiple needs of today’s visitors to the Central Library and our 20 neighbourhood branches. And we really want to learn what your ideal library looks like!
Free-for-all: Reimagining Your Library kicks off in November to engage the community, staff and Trustees about the future of the Vancouver Public Library.
In 2010, one million more people than in 2009 visited our virtual branch, vpl.ca. We also know that our 21 physical locations are vibrant and popular community destinations. Both are important, so what does the future have in store for these very different library spaces? Vancouver Public Library asks that you bring your ideas and enthusiasm so that we can envision the future together.
From November 2011 through to Fall 2012, Library staff will present interesting, fun and interactive activities – live and online – to explore these themes:
- Public places and learning spaces
- Books, Music, Movies and More – changing ways to read, watch and listen
- Helping children and families succeed
- Programs and Training: To learn, to enjoy, to grow
November 29 - Public Places and Learning Spaces
On Tuesday, November 29, the Central Library will turn into a Free-for-all zone when you can Choose Your Own Adventure to imagine your library of the future. We’ll provide you with a story to follow set in the Central Library. You’ll decide where the story leads. With twists and turns along the way, you’ll meet other adventurers, engage with Library staff and experience creative and fun activities. Your story will help the Library make important decisions about what our future Library looks like.
Can’t make it down to the Central Library on November 29? Not a problem! Visit www.vpl.ca/freeforall to access a Conversation Kit to have a Free-for-all with family members, friends, neighbours and colleagues.
And there are prizes – for in-person and online participants!
- An exclusive guided tour of the Central Library green roof - a hands-on adventure
- An iPod nano - an audio adventure
- A bag of new books - a visual adventure
