General Job Descriptions
Shelvers
VPL Shelvers sort and shelve a variety of library materials, including books, periodicals, pamphlets, and related materials. They revise the order of materials on shelves, maintain desks, shelves and public areas inan orderly fashion, and perform other related duties.
Qualifications include enrolment in High School as a minimum requirement, preferably coupled with some prior work experience. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, learn clerical tasks readily, adhere to routines, and perform routine tasks with a high degree of physical stamina. Minimum age requirement is 15 years old.
Library Technicians
VPL Library Technicians perform non-professional, technical work including providing reference and readers' advisory services, reviewing, selecting and indexing articles, participating in the development and maintenance of the collection, assisting in the planning of programs and preparing a variety of correspondence and reports.Qualifications include completion of an approved Library Technician diploma program plus some related library experience.
Librarians
VPL Librarians perform professional work such as providing information, reference and readers' advisory services to the public and staff, preparing guides to resources, indexing clippings of newspaper articles, maintaining and updating a variety of print and electronic references sources, creating and maintaining web-based documents and presenting programs to promote the library and effective use of our resources.Qualifications include graduation from a recognized University plus a degree in librarianship from an accredited Library School and preferably some professional library experience.
