We welcome gifts, which help to enhance our collections.

What We Accept

The library needs books, DVDs, CDs and magazines. They should be:

in good condition
of current interest

Items automatically sent to our book sale to generate funds for the library:

outdated audiovisual formats, such as audiocassettes and videocassettes
older editions of material, such as encyclopedia sets and travel guides

The Library Cannot Use

mouldy, yellowed or marked material
licensed software programs

Tax Receipts Available

You may request a tax receipt for material added to the collection with a value over $25. Please provide an itemized list with your donation.

Tax regulations require gifts of more than $1,000 to be valued by an independent appraiser. The appraisal is made at the donor’s expense.

Important Facts About Your Gift

All gifts become the property of the Vancouver Public Library.

Donated material is accepted under the same selection criteria as applied to purchased materials.

The Library reserves the right to decide the disposition of all gifts received, and to refuse unsuitable material.

Material which is not needed for the collection may be sold for the benefit of the library.

Getting the Items Here

Donors are responsible for delivering gifts to the Library.

Smaller gifts may be delivered to any branch during regular branch hours (space permitting) or brought to the Central Library’s shipping dock between 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. Materials must be in boxes marked as gifts for the Library.

Larger gifts require pre-arrangement before delivery. Contact the Head of Acquisitions at 604-331-4033 or Library Management at 604-331-4000 to discuss the nature and size of your gift.

Pick-up may be authorized for donations of value to the Library.

If you would like an acknowledgement of your donation, either for yourself or on behalf of another, please complete a gift form (available at any location) and include it with your donation.
