Gift Policy and Procedure

POLICY

The Library welcomes donations of books, materials, or money for the purchase of books, materials, equipment or facility enhancement.

We reserve the right to decide the disposition of all gifts received. All donated material is reviewed according to the same selection criteria applied to purchased materials. Processing costs and space are significant considerations.

All gifts become the property of the Vancouver Public Library. Material, which is not needed for the Collection, may be sold for the benefit of the Library.

PROCEDURE

Gifts may be delivered to any Branch of the Library. As a rule the Library does not pick up gifts or pay transportation costs. However, there may be instances where, in the public service librarians' judgement, a pick-up by the Library is appropriate. If in doubt, the Librarian may contact a Manager. Where transportation is required, the Head of Acquisitions may be contacted to arrange pick-up.

Commercially sponsored materials may be received with the proviso that the quantity and quality of built-in advertising is of an acceptable level.

All gifts for which the donor does not request anonymity will be acknowledged by a letter from the Library.

When a prestigious gift is received, if the donor consents, appropriate publicity should be arranged. This results in favourable public relations and general goodwill.
