Types of Positions

There are a wide range of positions and employment opportunities at VPL. The following are some of the more common positions, their duties and qualifications.

 

Library Service Assistants

Library Service Assistants are responsible for sorting and shelving a variety of materials, maintaining order and neatness of public areas and basic preparation of books and materials. Assists in the processing, sorting of materials and with Circulation desk duties.

Education

  • Completion of Grade 12

Experience

  • Experience in a customer service environment; some experience in a library setting is an asset.

Library Public Service Associate 1

Working collaboratively within their team and system-wide, the incumbent creates a welcoming, patron centered experience through the delivery of responsive circulation and basic information service.  Supports library programming. Understands and supports community-led approaches.  Represents the Library’s vision, mission and values by demonstrating and modeling conduct that reflects the library’s policies and procedures.

Education:

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by relevant courses and/or experience.

Experience:

  • Experience in a customer service environment. Related experience in the provision of library services preferred. 

Library Public Service Associate 2

Working collaboratively within their team and system-wide, the incumbent creates a welcoming, patron centered experience through the delivery of responsive circulation and basic information service.  Supports library programming. Understands and supports community-led approaches.  Represents the Library’s vision, mission and values by demonstrating and modeling conduct that reflects the library’s policies and procedures.  The incumbent provides clerical support to the worksite team and provides direction and first level supervision to the Library Public Service Associate I and Library Service Assistant staff in the absence of a direct supervisor.

Education:

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by relevant courses and/or experience.

Experience:

  • Relevant related library service with some demonstrated team lead or supervisory experience.

Senior Library Public Service Associate

Working collaboratively within their team and system-wide, this position creates a welcoming, patron-centered experience through its involvement in the design, planning, and delivery of responsive information services and a variety of library and literacy programs.  Under the guidance of a librarian, the incumbent assists in the planning of programming for children, teens and adults. The incumbent delivers programs for children, teens and adults. This position provides instruction and support to the public on to the use of digital devices such as e-readers to access library resources. An incumbent in this role understands and practices community-led approaches and represents the Library’s vision, mission and values by demonstrating and modeling conduct that reflects the library’s policies and procedures.

Education/Qualifications/Experience: 

  • Completion of an approved Library Technician diploma program and 2 years of experience in a customer service environment

OR

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree from a recognized university and two years of experience in a customer service environment, and considerable experience demonstrated in an area such as programming, information services, collection maintenance, and/or community collaboration.

Library Assistants

VPL Library Assistants perform desk duties related to the checking in and out of library materials, including helping people with self-service check out. They register people, collect overdue fines, process library materials, handle cash and assist with basic questions and directions. Duties vary depending on location.

Education

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by basic computer courses

Experience

  • Some related experience with demonstrated clerical and customer service skills is required

Library Technicians

VPL Library Technicians perform paraprofessional, technical work including providing reference and readers’ advisory services, reviewing, selecting and indexing articles, participating in the development and maintenance of the collection, assisting in the planning and delivery of programs and preparing a variety of correspondence and reports.

Education

  • Completion of an approved Library Technician Diploma program supplemented by courses in the use of computers

Experience

  • Some related experience in the provision of library services including programming, information services, working with the community and collection maintenance

Librarians

VPL Librarians perform professional work such as providing information, reference and readers’ advisory services to the public and staff, preparing guidelines to resources, maintaining and updating a variety of print and electronic reference resources, creating and maintaining web pages and developing and presenting adult and children’s programs.

Education

  • Graduation from a recognized university plus a degree in librarianship from an accredited library school and preferably some professional library experience

Experience

  • Experience in the provision of library services including programming, information services, working with the community and collection management

Managers

Managers at the Library report to Directors and are normally responsible for the direct supervision of Assistant Managers and Branch Heads. Managers are responsible for the management and operation of either a group of libraries or a division of the Library. Managers ensure the creation and maintenance of a respectful and inclusionary workplace in keeping with the mission, values and goals of Vancouver Public Library.

Education

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences from an ALA accredited library school or post graduate degree in Planning, Social Sciences or other relevant discipline
  • Post-secondary courses in management studies

Experience

  • Five years of recent experience, including a minimum of two years experience in a supervisory position
  • Demonstrated leadership and managerial skills
  • Demonstrated research, analysis and report writing skills
